A guide to spring gardening

The evenings are getting lighter and the sun is beginning to make an appearance- spring is definitely on the horizon. Time to forget about those cold winter nights, and start waking up your spring garden.

Here are a few ideas to get you started…

1. Create a gardening plan

Having winter off, you are most likely feeling a little unmotivated to get yourself back pottering around the garden- create yourself a job list! Add in a few simple tasks to get you started, such as mowing the lawn or painting the furniture. Once you have your list, prioritise and set realistic goals to get these done by. This is a fun and efficient way to get your garden looking beautiful again.

2. Preparation

Your garden is most likely looking a little neglected, and is in need of a little TLC. Wash down patios, wipe down furniture, clear your boarders and most importantly organise your tools- you’ll need these to be in tip top condition.

3. Add a spot of colour

It isn’t too early to start potting a few flowers and plants. It’s also a great way to inject some colour into your garden, snowdrops and daffodils are a great place to start. You may also want to start thinking about your summer garden, plan ahead and visit a few garden centres for some inspiration.

4. Look out for wildlife

Expect to see more animals and insects in your garden as the months begin to get warmer. For this reason, make sure your garden is wildlife friendly. Put up bird feeders and nesting boxes, make sure there is a clean water source such as a bird bath and plenty of places for them to take shelter.

5. Don’t forget your vegetables

If you have always wanted to have your own little garden allotment, then this is the perfect time to get started. Select your area and make sure it is free of any weeds or stones, you need your soil to be in perfect condition. Be selective and carry out some research on what you wish to grow, vegetables need different amounts of care so be sure to know what it is you need to do.

Enjoy your spring garden and most importantly get it right now and you will be all set for the best summer garden yet!
