Changes to Council Tax for Landlords on empty properties from 1st April

As from 1st April Central Bedfordshire Council Tax Empty Property discounts have changed and Landlords in Dunstable, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard will now have to pay the full Council Tax when a property is empty whether it is furnished or unfurnished. This includes between tenancies or undergoing repair.

If your property is vacant or your current Agent is not finding you a tenant come and talk to the team at Belvoir Dunstable. We understand more than ever that a vacant property is now costing you even more money and will work hard to find a suitable tenant for your property.

Below is a summary of the key changes to the Council Tax from April 2013 that landlords should be aware of:

  • Owners of second homes (properties not occupied as a main home) will be required to pay the full Council Tax. . ( previously attracted a 10% discount)

  • Owners of unoccupied properties will be required to pay the full Council Tax. ( previously attracted a 6 month exemption period )

  • Owners of empty properties undergoing repair or major structural work will be required to pay the full Council Tax. ( previously attracted up to a 12 month exemption period )

  • Owners of long term empty homes will be required to pay the full Council Tax plus 50 per cent extra after the property has been empty for two years.

This is in keeping with the council’s commitment to tackling long-term empty homes by encouraging owners to bring their property back into use. More information can be found on the following website.
