Our Focus On series has proven to be a popular tool for home hunters looking to make their next move. In this series we have been looking at the history and landmarks in Corby to provide information on things that you might not know about the town.
Maternity Unit
In 1961 a maternity unit was opened for expectant mothers due to the growing population. The nearest hospital in Kettering was the only medical facility that could cater for a large population, so it was necessary for Corby to have something closer to home. This was built opposite the boating lake on Cottingham Road.
Transition to A Community Hospital
By the late 1970s the maternity unit closed and was turned into a respite centre and a home for patients to recover from operations and long-term illnesses. The hospital further evolved into the Corby Community Hospital, becoming the town’s sole hospital facility.
Present Day
Today, the Corby Community Hospital is part of the Willowbrook Health Complex and is managed by Northamptonshire’s NHS trust. The hospital offers a range of services which include community therapy services, physiotherapy, pathology as well as consulting rooms for various clinics. The site also houses an urgent care centre, dental practice, doctors surgery and parking. nhft.nhs.
Future Expansion
At the start of 2025 works began on extending the health complex to include a new diagnostics facility which will include MRI scanning, CT scans as well as Xray’s, ECGs and blood testing onsite.
Polly Grimmett, Director of Strategy for University Hospitals of Northamptonshire said:
“Our ambition is to reduce waiting times by increasing capacity for diagnostic tests across the county. As well as being more convenient for patients at a location away from the hospital, increased access to diagnostic testing will help with earlier diagnosis of conditions such as cancer and heart disease, and help patients access the life-saving treatments they need quickly.”
