Council Tax Now Payable on Vacant Properties - Ensure You Get a Quick Let

Did you know that council tax exemptions changed on 1st April 2013? This means that Landlords’ liability to council tax on their vacant properties has changed. Unoccupied and unfurnished properties may now be subject to a council tax discount of 25% for up to 12 months, whilst the circumstances remain unchanged. After 12 months, full council tax is payable.

Previously, unoccupied and unfurnished properties were exempt from council tax for 6 months, and then received a council tax discount of 50% if circumstances remained unchanged.

This means that Landlords are now liable for council tax on unfurnished properties as soon as the tenant has vacated. It is even more important now to choose a letting agent who can let your property quickly – speak to Belvoir today for expert advice.
