For most landlords the notion that their empty property may be the subject of invasion of squatters is not generally something they sit up all night worrying about. Nonetheless, it happens, and with the current economic climate the systems used by individuals to gain entry to properties are becoming ever more sophisticated.
Landlord Action (www.landlordaction.co.uk) has detailed one particular case in which the squatters used ‘The Freedom of Information Act’ to obtain information on empty properties were on a Council ‘Empty Property List’.
Squatting is not a criminal activity …… yet.
Landlord Action are supporting an early day motion by MP Mike Weatherley to ‘criminalise’ squatting and put in place forced measures for quicker eviction.
