A Proud Scottish Legacy in Corby

Known as “Little Scotland,” Corby has embraced a deep-rooted Scottish identity since the 1950s, when the booming steel industry attracted a large Scottish workforce. With that migration, came a passion for pipe bands and Highland culture and Bill Rutherford and Ron Stewart went on to establish the very first Corby Highland Gathering in 1968.

From Steel Sponsorship to Charter Field

The first event took place at the Welfare Club Grounds on Occupation Road and was proudly backed by the British Steel Corporation. Even after the steelworks shut down in the early 1980s, the spirit of the Gathering endured, thanks to support from the local council and a dedicated team of volunteers. Over the years, it has evolved and grown, eventually finding its long term home at Charter Field in Corby’s historic Old Village.

A Weekend of Tradition, Talent & Tartan

Each July, Corby comes alive with the sights, sounds, and spirit of Scotland. Highlights of the weekend include:

  • Massed pipe band parades through the streets, a moving spectacle of unity and sound
  • Pipe band competitions, held in partnership with the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association
  • All England Highland Dancing Championships, showcasing over 100 dancers from across the UK
  • Traditional Highland games such as caber tossing, tug-of-war, and feats of strength
  • Food, crafts & quirky contests, including the ever-popular porridge eating challenge

Powered by Volunteers-Fuelled by Community

The Gathering is a true labour of love, run entirely by volunteers who give their time and passion year after year. With annual costs exceeding £12,000, the Gathering depends on community fundraising, local sponsorship, and the enthusiasm of everyone involved—from performers and stallholders to families and first time visitors.

More Than an Event—A Cultural Cornerstone

Far beyond just a fun weekend, the Corby Highland Gathering is a celebration of heritage and togetherness. It honours the town’s Scottish roots while fostering a sense of pride, identity, and inclusion across generations. For many, it’s not just an event, it is a treasured annual tradition and a highlight of Corby’s summer.
