My neighbour in Enfield has just put in a pink front door and I love it but will it affect her, or even my, sale price?
Now I know there are a lot of people who think that the best colour choice for your front door is black or grey. They say red and dark blue can also be considered quite elegant, and that any other colours may be a bit ‘Marmite’, attracting some people and putting others off.
That all sounds very sensible doesn’t it, but doesn’t it also make your heart sink just a little bit?
Now, before I get into the detail let me just say that above everything else, more important than colour, material, style etc, is that your door is in good condition. No peeling paint, no chips, definitely no broken glass and patches of cardboard(!), no cobwebs or general dirt, no door knockers hanging off and no stickers about junk mail, avoiding the cat, or the owner being scarier than the dog! Your door and everything around it, needs to sparkle and look fabulous.
Ok so back to the colour. Colour can help your home stand out from the crowd to buyers, and as long as it’s not too strong, it’s almost always well received. Here’s a few things to think about to help you decide whether to play it safe or show some personality.
What do you need to consider?
Here’s a few things to think about when choosing your door colour:
What does the rest of your street look like?
There are certain times when a pink or yellow door will fit in perfectly and blend with the rest of the street – think Notting Hill and Portobello Road. In that area, a black or grey door would look completely out of place.
Then there are other times when a pink or colourful door would look ridiculous, I’m thinking of somewhere like Downing Street now <chuckle>
What does your garden look like?
If your home has a bit of a cottage feel going on, then a colourful door might fit perfectly like at this house.
I have a friend in Tottenham, (not somewhere you’d normally expect to find a pink front door) and she has an archway over her front gate that is covered in pink and white climbing roses, and a small front garden filled with pot after pot of well-established blooms and bushes. Looking from the street, a colourful door would be very much in-keeping.
Would it be in keeping with the exterior design of your home?
If you have an older maybe Victorian home with decorative glazed tiles in the porch area then a colourful door could look beautiful. I saw one some time ago with a deep green door, that perfectly complemented the green and yellow porch tiles.
Or if you have a garden path of black and white checked tiles, then a pink door in particular could look very stylish.
What does the inside of your home look like?
The front door can give a hint at what is inside. A luminous pink would probably make me think twice about ringing the bell. A door that matches the porch tiles would make me think that the inside is probably very well thought out and in sympathy with the age of the property. Whereas I would imagine a home with a dusky pink or pale green door, might be very comfortable and homely with a chunky wooden dining table and lots of home baked cookies!
In a nutshell
Black, grey, blue and red are safe bets, but if you choose your colour wisely and make sure it fits with the immediate surroundings, your door can help attract buyers to your home and help your sale.
