More About the Stoke on Trent Area

Why Stoke-on-Trent?

Stoke-On-Trent is an area of rich local history and industrial heritage. The city is made up of the six towns of Stoke-On-Trent – Burslem, Tunstall, Fenton, Hanley, Longton and Stoke, after they were unified in 1910. Before this, although only separated by a cart track called the Lane, each town developed its own unique identity, which still shine through to this day.

We are famed for our ceramic industry, which began to boom during the industrial revolution. The old pottery kilns around the city are hard to miss, and stand testament to the incredible work of the city. The Wedgewood pottery we produce to this day is still globally acclaimed, and as the fifth generation of pottery workers enter the factory, the industry shows no signs of slowing.

We are home to a variety of great people, who have changed the face of the United Kingdom forever. We can boast the designer of the spitfire, Reginald Mitchell, who’s innovations changed the events of WW2. We were once home to Josiah Wedgewood, who single-handedly revolutionised the global pottery industry. And of course, we have Sir Stanley Matthews CBE, one of the greatest footballers this world has known.

Stoke-On-Trent is a friendly, vibrant and ever-changing city, and our diverse history speaks for that. We have always been at the forefront of development, of industrialisation, and of change, and will continue to evolve well into the future. As we begin to leave behind the image of an old, industrial town, and grow into a bustling modern city, there has never been a better time to buy property in Stoke-On-Trent.

Our importance in Modern Britain

As well as being an area of amazing history, Stoke-On-Trent remains a very powerful, and relevant place in modern Britain.

Our hospital and it’s dedicated staff are pioneering medical treatments for strokes and dementia, and our numbers of medical students are at an all time high. Stoke-On-Trent is fast becoming a key area for the development of medicine in the UK, and because of this is turning into an incredibly attractive area to work and study.

We are also becoming a political powerhouse, with our votes and views being more important in national politics. We have three members of parliament, fighting for the regeneration and development of Stoke-On-Trent, turning it into an even better place to invest.

Our city centre, Hanley, is an area of huge regeneration, with new shops, restaurants and leisure outlets being opened all the time. There are hundreds of new jobs across the city, which is probably why Stoke-On-Trent has one of the fastest-growing economies of any UK city. There are new jobs, and new opportunities for investment springing up across the six towns, and now is the perfect time to get involved with the area.

The education opportunities in the area are also excellent. We are home to Staffordshire University, and very close to Keele University, both of which are home to thousands of students, from all over the globe. This makes the student market in the area huge, yet another reason why investment in Stoke-On-Trent is an excellent venture.

Transport links

Stoke-On-Trent is an area perfect for commuting, with incredible internal and external transport links, particularly from the brand-new Hanley bus station, and Stoke station.

By train, you can get to Manchester, and Birmingham in just 45 minutes, without having to change trains! You can reach Liverpool in only an hour, and London is just an hour and 15 minutes away, once again on only one train. With the station offering rail cards with massive discounts, this really is the perfect area for those who travel.

Our connection to the M6 through junctions 14 and 15 also makes us very well connected up and down the UK, as at any place in Stoke, access to a major motorway is only a short drive away. The inner-city transport links are also excellent, and the recently modernises Hanley bus station is a perfect example of this. Buses in the city run very regularly, and the council offer free bus passes in order to encourage locals to take the bus! This makes travel easy and very affordable.

There are proposals for there to be Trams built in the city centre for the first time in years, and suggestions for free bike schemes, like the one seen in London, to be rolled out across the city.

Four regional airports; Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool and East Midlands are all within approximately 60 minutes by car.

Leisure activities

Leisure and pleasure activities are on the doorstep; Rudyard Lake and The Peak District National Park provide the facilities for sailing, climbing, walking and many more outdoor pursuits.

For the theme park fans Alton Towers is within 30 minutes by car. The commercial hub of Stoke-on-Trent is Hanley where most of the ‘High Street’ stores can be found in and around ‘The Potteries Shopping Centre’.
