Local Housing Market Information
Local Information about Peterborough and the Housing Market
Peterborough is a city of energy – alive with culture, colour and community. There is so much to discover, from historical aspects, retail and heritage.
Peterborough is a dramatically developing area and so a great place to live and also for people wishing to invest in properties. The following is a short summary of the developments which are underway.
Peterborough's economy is booming. With a regeneration project that is breathing new life into the city and surrounding areas and the M11 corridor project which is committed to creating 17,500 jobs by 2020 – these are all exciting plans!
For those who enjoy shopping, Peterborough’s award-winning Queensgate Centre has over 90 stores, including Primark in the recently extended 10,000 ft² extension, John Lewis, Top shop, Pandora and HMV.
Queensgate is complimented by independent outlets in Westgate Arcade, as well as regular specialist farmers’ and continental markets and a longstanding lively covered market in the city centre, which reflects our multicultural population,
Outside the city centre, there are also a number of new retail offerings including Brotherhood Retail Park which offers stores such as Next, ASDA Living, COSTA, H& M and a Marks & Spencer Superstore. There is also Peterborough Garden Park, which was awarded the best out of town retail development 2011 by the British Council of Shopping Centres (BCSC). The garden park is anchored by Van Hage, which is home to a range of shops including Van Hage, Le Creuset and Hobby Craft.
Serpentine Green located in the Hampton Township to the south of Peterborough, widens the retail choice in the city, with stores including H&M, Outfit and 90,000sqft Tesco’s Extra, which stocks clothes and homeware, as well as groceries.
Peterborough is to become the country’s second zero carbon community in its Carbon Challenge. The first step being 450 environmentally sustainable homes at South Bank Phase 1 (Glebe Road).
The Carbon Challenge is an opportunity for developers to gain experience of building to the highest level of the government's Code for Sustainable Homes. It calls on developers to demonstrate that zero carbon homes, combined with cutting-edge building design and technology, are economically viable on a commercial scale.
It is the focus of significant central government interest and will significantly raise the profile of Peterborough in this area.
There has been an increase in new property development sites within the Peterborough area. There is now a delightful development called Hatten Grange which offers a superb range of brand new 2 & 3 bedroom homes in the convenient and popular location of Walton. There are still new homes being built on the Potters way development in Fengate and as well as apartments, they have introduced 2 and three bedroom houses which are proving popular!
As well as this, new homes are being built on the development of Burghfield Place in Peterborough which is next to Itter Park in Werrington. This will be a sizeable area for new homes in the area. There are also new homes being built on a development off Thorpe Road in Peterborough. These are the larger bespoke detached family homes.
Amongst these developments, the hugely popular Hampton development is still expanding. They are creating a community by developing its Primary schools, Secondary Schools and Colleges further to equip them with more needs and facilities within the site. They are also including a church, new sports complex and more restaurants.
Peterborough has been ear-marked for government investment to continue developing its comprehensive schools into academies or upgrading their facilities. There are several state schools to choose from and one independent boarding school. Peterborough now houses 2 University campuses (Anglia Ruskin and University Centre Peterborough). This means that Peterborough can develop and deliver high quality university education for its community and surrounding areas.
