There are some FAQ’s which I hope I have answered below:
1) What actually is Legionnaires Disease?
It is an illness contracted by inhaling drops of water contaminated by Legionella bacteria. The bacteria is actually found in most water systems, but multiplies and becomes dangerous in stagnant water with temperatures between 20°C and 45°C-it is killed in temperatures above 60°C
2) How do I carry out the assessment?
You should consider the following points:
a) Is the water stored or re-circulated?
b) Might the water temperature in some or all parts of the system be between 25°C-45°C?
c) Could there be rust, sludge or scaling in the system?
d) Are there conditions present which could allow bacteria to multiply, such as stagnant water (which could be found in redundant pipework or outlets that are not frequently used)?
3) Do I need to keep a record of the assessment that I have carried out?
Yes, and ideally the record should show:
a) Name of the assessor and review date;
b) The systems you have looked at and potential sources of risk;
c) Controls in place to control risks;
d) The result of any tests that have taken place.
4) What can I do to control risk?
a) Keep water in the boiler at a minimum of 60°C;
b) Clean and descale shower heads between lets-especially in showers that you know have had infrequent use;
c) Flush through water units that are not regularly used;
d) Ensure cold water tanks are insulated and have a closed lid.
