Did you know moving house is one of the 3 most stressful moments in a person’s life? That’s along with divorce and a bereavement. That’s correct, moving house is considered as stressful as getting a divorce and a close family member passing away.
We’ve compiled a few tips that may help prevent that overwhelming feeling that comes with packing up your life and moving it somewhere else.
According to AnyVan.com, an expert moving company, the best way to make your move as problem-free as possible is to adhere to the 3 Ps – Planning, Preparation & Packing.
It is advised that you start planning your move as soon as you know it’s happening, the last thing you need is a last minute panic.
You need to consider these three things – Time, Costs & Admin.
Ask yourself how much time certain things will take to pack up, i.e. the kitchen, filled with plates, crockery, silverware and other utensils, is most likely going to take longer to pack than the little bathroom under the stairs. Therefore, it’s probably a good idea to start in there early on.
Also, do not underestimate how long a room might take. There will almost always be something you’ve missed, whether it’s that slow cooker in that bottom cupboard or you’ve suddenly realised a certain piece of furniture needs to be dismantled otherwise it’s not getting out the front door. A good rule to remember – if it didn’t fit when you brought it in, it’s not going to fit when you take it out.
Don’t forget the costs that are associated with moving. Make sure you consider just how much goes into your move so you don’t get any nasty shocks later on. These costs can range from removals to storage to mortgage fees. Consider everything and be prepared.
Finally, don’t underestimate how much admin goes along with a move. Aside from making sure all your family and friends are aware of your new address, others need to know. When we say others we mean – the bank, the doctors, the DVLA, Sky TV, the milkman! The list goes on. So, don’t forget all the changes of address you’re going to have to make. It is likely you’ll forget many of these. A good way not to is to think of all the mail that regularly comes through your door and go on that.
While planning is going on there are some other steps you can begin to take.
De-cluttering is always a good one to start with. This makes the packing up phase so much easier. You should start throwing away things you know you don’t need. If you’re struggling to decide on what to chuck, start with things that haven’t been used for a while. In all likelihood they’re never going to get used again.
Start collecting boxes. You’re going to need a lot of them. You can either buy these, take them from supermarkets, or borrow them from friends. Usually, if you ask a cashier at your local shop they’ll have plenty of unused, empty boxes in the back that they’ll be happy to hand over. Alternatively, friends or family members are likely storing boxes in their attic from their last move.
Don’t forget the amount of tape that comes with these boxes! Remember – if there’s a BOX, it’s going to need TAPE. Got fragile items? You’re going to need bubble wrap or old newspapers. Stop throwing out old newspapers so you can use it as stuffing.
A good way to approach packing is to consider the “essentials” and the “non-essentials”.
You should start with packing up the non-essentials. These are the things you’re not likely to use in the weeks leading up to the move. For example, a blender or even certain non-perishables could be considered non-essentials. Once you’ve packed away these, you’ll only have the far fewer essentials left. It is also advisable to label boxes and keep a couple in each room so that you can pack as you go.
Essentials could be anything from tea bags to toothbrushes. It is advised you designate some essentials to go in the car with you when you move instead of the moving van so they can be used as soon as you move in. You don’t want to suddenly realise your loo roll is in the moving van that got stuck in traffic some 80 miles away.
If you’ve got young children it is advisable to pack up their rooms last so they don’t feel too affected by what is going on and then unpack their boxes first so they can feel at home as soon as possible.
Don’t forget other admin you may have to do once you’ve moved in such as – registering with a new doctor/dentist or taking meter readings.
Finally, don’t forget to take a breath and remember why you’re moving in the first place. You’re starting a new and exciting chapter in your life – all that time and energy will be worth it.
