What to See and Do in Sutton Coldfield

Sutton Coldfield, or simply Sutton, is a town in Birmingham only 6.5 miles (or 10km) northeast of Birmingham City centre and bordering North Warwickshire, Little Ashton, Lichfield, and South Staffordshire. This prosperous town encompasses the Four Oaks Park Estate and borders the Little Aston Park Private Estate.

The earliest known signs of human life can be traced back to the Bronze Age. There is also visible presence of Roman occupation in Sutton Park where a 1.5 mile (or 2.4km) preserved section of Icknield Street passes through. The affluence of the town began in the 17th and 18th centuries with industrial growth that vastly improved the residents’ life.

Today, Sutton Coldfield continues to develop and grow with an increasing population and continued construction, providing the perfect environment for every taste with shops, nightlife, and parks.

Sutton Park

Nature lovers need to stop by Sutton Park and enjoy the 2,000 acres of woodlands, heathland, marshes, wetlands, and seven lakes rich in wildlife and plants. Animals roam free in the historic landscape, which is an important site for wildlife and the conservation of centuries-old natural countryside.

The green scenery is perfect for jogging, walking, nature watching, having a picnic, or cycling. The park has facilities like food and drink establishments, car parking, and hand washing facilities. Dogs are welcome but must be kept under control due to the roaming wildlife, and kept on leads during bird nesting season.

Moor Hall Golf Club

Situated in heart of Sutton Coldfield, Moor Hall Golf Club is on the north eastern outskirts of Birmingham. The Golf Club is perfect for societies, corporate golf days, and individual visitors who want to play in the amazing, friendly atmosphere of the club.

The separately owned, 4 star Best Western Moor Hall Hotel and Spa is close by. Dating back to the 15th century, the original house was demolished in 1905 by Colonel Edward Ansell of Ansells Brewery, where he constructed a modern mansion. This hotel was a private residence until 1930, and part of the 1905 house can still be seen.

Sutton Coldfield Town Hall

This former hotel and council building is Grade A locally listed. With stunning views of the larger areas of south Sutton Coldfield, the structure dates back to 1865 and the extension to 1906. The stunning building has seen many uses throughout time; in 1896 it was converted to a sanatorium but sold in 1901 for £9,000 pounds.

Present day sees the Town Hall being used as a theatre, concert hall, social function and wedding venue. In 2014 it was announced that part of the building was to be converted into 18 residential apartments, with a further 35 apartments and two restaurants constructed in adjacent land.
