Simple Ways to Save Electricity In Summer

It’s summer, a time of the year when family and friends get together to enjoy the good weather. However, it is also the time of skyrocketing electric bills.

One of the best ways to save your wallet is to shift your energy-consuming energy practice.

1. Set up your Air Conditioning Unit properly.

Air Conditioning Unit (ACU) is one of the appliances that consume the highest electricity in summer. Everybody wants to walk into a cold room after spending some time in a hot temperature outside. Proper management of your ACU could give you bigger savings.

You can start with the annual maintenance check of your ACU, preferably before summer. Change the filter regularly and make sure to open the vents. Use the energy-saving option on your ACU as much as possible.

Avoid turning your ACU on “high” at night for it may raise your utility bills since it would use much electricity turning on a hot room to cool.

It is recommended to turn back your thermostat to 7 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit for 8 hours a day from its normal setting so you can save up to 10% a year on cooling and heating.

2. Unplug appliances when not in use.

You might say, “It’s alright. Anyway, I’m not using it so it won’t consume electricity.” It is WRONG. Anything you leave unplugged will continue to draw electricity from the outlet. Although this can only cost a small amount of money, it can add up over time and would cost you a lot without you noticing it. One of the resolutions is to use power strips.

Connect the plugs to power strips to make it more convenient. When appliances are not in use, simply turn off the power strips to make sure you save energy.

3. Keep it cool down.

We know that natural light can save you energy, but many people are not realizing that sunlight heats your room during summer as temperature increases which in turn makes your ACU works even harder resulting in higher electricity consumption.

Keeping your curtains closed during the daytime could minimize the incoming heat on at least 30%. You can also use window awnings to keep the heat of the sun from getting in. Closing your doors is also a good practice during this season.

When the temperature is at its highest, maintaining your ACU, unplugging your appliances, and keeping the heat from getting into your home could save you from high electricity consumption. It is best to enjoy the summer without compromising your budget.
