A Belvoir agent received a query regarding a Visa for a couple wishing to rent a house. The woman was born in the UK but has a US passport and a Visa, which expires in 6 months’ time.
The right to rent scheme is being trialled in some areas and makes the Landlord responsible for checking a tenant’s eligibility to reside in the UK. Whilst it has not been rolled out in the Daventry area, it is a good idea to be checking tenant’s residency eligibility now. In this case the Landlord was advised to check the passport and visa now and at 6 months, check her continued right to remain in the UK. Landlords are under an obligation if you believe someone ceases to be in the UK legally to inform the authorities.
