New UK Government Tenants Charter Explained by Belvoir Cambridge

Eric Pickles the Communities Secretary has announced a tenants charter which aims to improve standards, encourage longer term tenancies and tackle rogue landlords.

The proposals will raise the quality and choice of rental accommodation, help to root out the cowboys and rogue operators plus give tenants the confidence to request longer fixed-term, family-friendly tenancies that meet their needs.

The Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012 will provide magistrates courts with the power to impose unlimited fines on landlords who are found guilty of not meeting their statutory responsibilities.

To further help tackle rogue landlords courts will also be able to take account of offenders assets as well as their income.
