Are You Ready to Move in Together? Things to Consider Before Making a Decision

If you’ve been with your significant other for quite a while, and you basically spend every night with each other anyway, you might be considered whether it’s time to move out and get your own place together. Merging spaces with each other can be both exciting and terrifying – so you need to be certain that it’s the correct move to make in your relationship.

As a letting agent in Sutton Coldfield, we have helped a lot of couples find their first place to rent to together. When asked how they knew it was the right time, they all had a number of different responses.

If you’re thinking of taking the next step in your relationship but you’re not sure whether it’s the right time, we thought we would help you out a little. We’ve put together a list of things that you might want to consider before making any quick decisions.

Rent Before Buying

The thought of owning your own house might sound appealing, but we wouldn’t recommend buying a house with a partner that you have never lived with before. Buying a house is something that will bind you both legally, and if anything was to happen to your relationship, it makes it a lot harder to part ways. If one person refuses to pay the mortgage, the other will be liable to pay it. With renting, you are contracted to a certain period, and when your lease is up – you can move out and part ways. Therefore, we suggest renting first and test how compatible you both are when living together.

Have You Had an Argument and Survived?

This might seem like a silly question, but it can actually be a very important deciding factor when weighing up whether to move in together. All couples argue, but what’s important is the way that you deal with an argument. If you rush back home to your house and refuse to speak to your partner for days or ask for a break up – then you’re probably not in the right place to live together. If you both calm down and discuss your problems together? Get looking for houses!

Your Relationship Will Change

There is no getting around this one; your relationship is definitely going to change. Whether it’s for good or not is up to you, but it’s going to happen. You’ll see things about your partner that you don’t like or that annoys you and they will be thinking the same about you. You’ll see each other at their best and not so best – it’s the way that you adapt to each other that will make or break you.

Are You Ready to Commit?

We think this is probably the most important thing to consider, are you both ready to commit to living together? Are you ready to share finances? Ready to sacrifice nights out to save money? Are you both ready to settle arguments as adults? If the answer is no to any of these questions then you should probably reconsider moving in together just yet.
